The Issue of Child Abuse
Every year more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States. It’s a terrible epidemic that we at Childhelp are dedicated to put an end to. To do this, we need to first increase awareness of the issue itself.
What is child abuse? Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child maltreatment, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, and emotional abuse.

As the sounds of Childhelp Celebrity Ambassador John O’Hurley singing “God Bless America” filled the Senate Russell Caucus Room and the silence of Childhelp Celebrity Ambassador Jane Seymour lighting the four-wicked candle which represents the four children who die each day from child abuse and neglect drew reflection, Ray and Daran Grimm were overwhelmed with emotion. They had been supporters of Childhelp for nearly 30 years, the Grimms were the guests of honor at a special Day of Hope luncheon with Congressional leaders. A host of senators attended the event, including Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) and his wife, Jackie, Senate GOP Whip Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) and his wife, Caryll, and Sens. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.), Susan Collins (RMaine), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Lisa Murkowksi (R-Alaska) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) also attended.
The Grimms were being honored by Childhelp cofounders Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson with the prestigious Day of Hope Corporate Award during Childhelp’s annual Day of Hope luncheon. Since becoming involved in Childhelp, Daran and Ray Grimm have been a shining example of love to 12 Childhelp children throughout the years. They have also been responsible for the fundraising efforts that helped build a gymnasium for the Merv Griffin Village in Beaumont, Calif. In addition, Ray has served on Childhelp’s state board, both as a member and as president.
“Ray and I would swim any ocean, move any mountain to help stamp out child abuse,” Daran said. “We have personally seen so many precious lives changed by this amazing organization, but there are so many children who still need our help. We are so glad that we can support.
